Cannes, Day 3 – Rihanna on the Red Carpet Steps

It was almost as if time suddenly stood still in Cannes. As if the red carpet spilling in front of the Palais des Festivals had taken a sharp intake of breath at the appearance of Rihanna, in Dior haute couture. For her first ascent of the iconic red steps, the star, and close House friend, had chosen an off-white taffeta strapless dress and matching coat, designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri. It made for a spectacular silhouette, one that drew the attention of all the Croisette: to the sound of her song “Diamonds” and the shouts of photographers and fans alike, Rihanna stood solo in front if the whirring avalanche of camera flashes, the red carpet having been roped off uniquely for her arrival.

The Exhibition Christian Dior - Esprits de Parfums

Yesterday in Grasse, the exhibition Christian Dior - Esprits de Parfums opened at the Musée International de la Parfumerie. It provides an opportunity, until October 1st, to discover Monsieur Dior’s passion for the south of France and the region’s influence on his olfactory creations.

It is difficult to imagine the care and attention that go into researching a new perfume, the development of the bottle, even the packaging,” Christian Dior admitted in his memoirs. “These pursuits are so absorbing that today I feel myself to be as much a perfumer as a couturier.” It’s this "couturier-perfumer” itinerary that the exhibition Christian Dior - Esprits de Parfums retraces,  beginning with his inspirations. His mother, Madeleine, the garden of his childhood home at Granville, but also his artist friends, all having shaped his vision of nature, of women and flowers, which he would unceasingly celebrate in his work. Next the exhibition takes us to all the places in the south of France loved by Christian Dior: from Callian where his family found refuge after the crash of 1929, and where today certain flowers for the House’s perfumes are grown, to the Château de la Colle Noire bought in 1951 and now restored by the House. On this voyage we meet the perfumers of the region with whom Monsieur Dior worked, finding in it the scent of Miss Dior, the Grasse fragrance that it is. Not to mention being the eternal couture fragrance. It is on this indissoluble link between couture and perfume that the exhibition concludes, bringing visitors back to the New Look show, a revolution at which Christian Dior presented his first fragrance at the same time as his first collection, but also coming back to the savoir-faire and the codes that make Dior perfumes unique.

The Centifolia Rose, Muse to Dior Perfumes

When Christian Dior bought the Colle Noire estate, not far from Grasse, he cultivated that exceptional terroir's emblematic flower: the centifolia rose. Today more than ever it inspires François Demachy's creations for Dior and lends the House’s fragrances their powerful and sensual notes.
