DiorMag exclusively unveils the fittings and the backstage scene of the spring-summer 2014 ready-to-wear collection. It's at this key moment in the preparation of the show that the clothes receive their final touch from the hands of Raf Simons, and reveal all the savoir-faire that has gone into them.
A gentle hand adjusting a dress pleat, the needles reshaping a hem, the models coming and going, showing off the light-as-air movements of a skirt. The clothes in the ready-to-wear collection seem to come to life, one after the other, attaining their ultimate degree of perfection.
The fittings are the final stage in the making of a collection, a necessary step that guarantees the clothes their desired style and wraps up a long creative process. Everything starts with the sketches of Raf Simons, the house's creative director, who puts his endlessly renewed vision of the Dior woman down of paper. The role of the ateliers lies in interpreting these designs which are still just two-dimensional notions. "The ateliers are decypherers of hieroglyphs ", Monsieur Dior once commented. And it's at 30 Avenue Montaigne, the house's historic heart in which the spirit of the couturier is still very much present, that this deciphering takes place and where the seamstresses are occupied constructing toiles, creating the initial prototypes for future garments, creating the patterns that will be used to make up each item in its correct fabric. Those fabrics are selected with the utmost care from the best mills.
This is how the garment comes into being: the cut-out fabric pieces are put together, basted then properly sewn with painstaking attention to detail by the petites mains. All this expertise particular to Dior is revealed during these crucial steps in the bringing to life of a garment: each suit, each dress inspired by the New Look created by Christian Dior is based on a complex construction, quasi architectural, and extremely meticulous. So many steps, rituals and talents that, collection after collection, create the excellence that is Dior clothing.
