LADY MARLENE

IMAGEN

As the sixty-fourth edition of the Berlinale kicks off, DiorMag  is now available in German from today. An occasion to look back at the links that unite the house to the word of cinema, and to the actress Marlene Dietrich in particular.

From the first movies for which Christian Dior designed costumes in the 1940s, down to the actresses such as Natalie Portman, Marion Cotillard, Charlize Theron and Jennifer Lawrence who lend their star aura to the house today, via the legendary stars wearing Dior on film as in real life, the history that unites the house at 30 Avenue Montaigne with the world of cinema is continuously being written year after year, from film to festival, with the same depth of passion.
This story of stars in Dior all started with Marlene Dietrich. A friend of the couturier from the very beginning, she was there to witness his launch on an unsuspecting world, missed none of his success as the New Look  snow balled into a veritable revolution, and Christian Dior regularly invited her to stay at his Milly la Forêt country house.
But more than being just a close friend, Marlene Dietrich was also one of the couturier's most fervent fans.

Her favorite perfume? Diorama . Her favorite lipstick? Rouge Dior . Her dresses, furs and suits? Dior once again. And on the silver screen, too, in Stage Fright  by Alfred Hitchcock and No Highway in the Sky  by Henry Koster, the star wore the dresses of her couturier friend, which served only to heighten her extraordinary seductive presence. In this the actress wasn't mistaken: in the movies the clothes one wears are essential, and those designed by Christian Dior were perfect for her roles. And so she felt more than confident in being able to impose the couturier on Alfred Hitchcock, defiantly throwing out an ultimatum that has remained justifiably famous: "No Dior, no Dietrich! "
