The art of marquetry according to Dior Maison

The fruit of exceptional savoir-faire, straw marquetry enhances two Dior creations: a cigar box and a watch box accommodating up to six.

After harvesting, the strands of rye straw are dried for bleaching and carefully selected. Only the finest part is kept and is thereafter cut with precision, gathered into bundles and immersed in dye baths. Each fiber is unique and has its own tint, unveiling, after the coloring process, a singular brilliance that the expert hands of the Ateliers use to sort and compose a fascinating shade chart.

To conceive the design, the straw is first split in two and flattened to reveal its shine. Each stalk is then individually glued onto the backing – a task requiring infinite meticulousness – before being cut to the desired shape in order to make geometric motifs assembled by hand.

The box, made in Italy, is sometimes magnified with a velvet interior. Prior to its adornment with precious panels, several layers of lacquer are applied as a coating, creating irresistible textures. These virtuoso techniques are exalted through the poetry of gestures and materials.

Available in limited editions in selected Dior boutiques, these objects of desire celebrate the art of detail so dear to the House.
